Which challenges do you see growing in the music industry and how should they be handled?
The shift from digital downloads to streaming revenue / subscription models is obviously the biggest challenge. Streaming mechanisms from spotify to YouTube must correct their compensation models for songwriters. The only way to handle this right now is through opportunities provided by companies like GRM / SESAC which are not bound by the congressional consent decree or through artists and publishers willing to take a stand against these companies. We must be willing to pull our content.
What are your biggest focus areas in 2015?
Breaking new artists / writers signed to the respective labels and publishing companies I oversee. Possibly expanding the management roster for the right select clients.
How do you see the Nordic/Norwegian music scene evolving?
Some of the best writers and producers in the world come from Norway. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Stargate for years and recently signed / worked to develop Cashmere Cat, who is one of the most talented young producers I have ever met. I believe the Nordic music scene will only continue to grow it’s influence in global pop music.
What is the Nordic music scene’s best attributes?
The writers, producers and artists I have encountered from Norway over the years have a fierce musical independence. You won’t hear derivative work from this area of the world.
