The Quietus At… Les Big Byrd

Les Big Byrd’s drummer has a tidy haircut and a fetching rollneck. He’s also festooned with lights, perhaps the remaining parts of a time machine that’s brought him here from mid-70s Germany. His presence is crucial to Les Big Byrd, whose name (displayed onstage on a lighbox using a font that’s dangerously Austin Powers) suggests a fascination with the 60s, something bourne out by the gargantuan sideburns and scruffy denim on the rest of the group. It’s the drummer’s use of the Dinger beat that gives Les Big Byrd just about big enough wings to lift them somewhat above the current glut of retro psyche groups.
