The Quietus At East India Youth

East India Youth? East India Doof more like! EH? Eh?! Oh suit yourselves… William Doyle has clearly not been sitting on his hands since his Mercury Prize nomination last year. Not only is the new material from XL album Culture Of Volume killer but even classic material from last year’s TOTAL STRIFE FOREVER has been assimilated by the Borg and injected with steroids. Looking For Someone now has a satisfyingly punchy bottom end and fits seamlessly next to the 21st century electro pop of Beaming White which calls to mind Pet Shop Boys and Underworld. And by the time he gets to new single Turn Away, it’s clear that he now has an enviable arsenal of copper bottomed bangers at his disposal. It’s probably Doyle’s ability to switch effortlessly between ballads and bangers, techno and torch song, poptimist trance and opulent dance and being equally comfortable in all, that marks him out as a true one in a generation talent. An exceptionally brilliant show from a singular artist.
