The Quietus at… Vulkano

The Swedish group have a fair amount of murmuring seismic activity and false start before they finally get going, so much so that one wonders if it’s not all part of a clever conceptual performance. But the eruption, when it comes, is odd and lurid. With the two frontwomen whacking away on drums they sing a strange song about spiders, backed by an excitable punk funk guitarist and rhythm section. As an aside, it’s always good to hear Scandinavians like Vulkano speak in their own languages to the crowd between songs at By:Larm. Imagine if British groups felt they ought speak in American at SXSW!? East India Youth saying “yo bro I’m like totally stoked to be dropping my sophomore record. Sick.” It wouldn’t be right.
